Therapy for Child Depression

Counseling from the psychosocial approach such as “talk therapy” and “behavior therapy” are proven to help children recover from depression. Through counseling the child learns to cope with the triggers and stressors that may impact a depressive state. These skills also help to minimize the physical and mental symptoms of depression.

Such therapies are known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a type of psychotherapy that has been widely studied and proven effective. Therapy works to change distorted thinking and unhealthy behavior without the use of medication. CBT has been used to treat conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and social anxiety in addition to depression. Children can be treated on their own, with the participation of a parent or in a group therapy setting. Child counseling will be based on which treatment is best for your child along with choosing an environment that is conducive to recovery and growth.
