What to Do If You or Someone You Know is Depressed

When a friend or family member is depressed, everyone around that person struggles, too. If you suspect that someone you know may be depressed, there are ways you may be able to help. Keep in mind, however, that depression is a real illness that does not change in a single conversation. Depressed individuals cannot “snap out of it,” nor are they capable of taking control of their negative feelings.

If you or a loved one is depressed, seek medical attention quickly. Identifying and treating depression early is key to improving the chances of a swift recovery. Even minor depressive disorder can quickly evolve into major depressive disorder and depression is a completely treatable and manageable mental illness. Depending on the type and extent of depression diagnosed, a doctor may prescribe antidepressant medications, therapy or other treatment methods to help address the problem and improve symptoms. Family and individual counseling may also provide relief for certain depression symptoms.  [Read more…]

Depression by Age

According to the National Institute for Mental Health, the average age for depression to start is age 32, although depression is diagnosed in people of all ages – from childhood to old age. Research suggests that individuals between the ages of 30 and 44 are most likely to suffer depression, although the risk remains high until age 60, when far fewer cases of depression are reported.  [Read more…]

Ansiedad Social (Miedo)

Reasons Why Teens Get Therapy

Back when our parents were students, few of their peers were in therapy. Times have changed and today it’s common, and accepted, for kids to get therapy.

The teenage years are difficult ones, with many teens facing family troubles and problems at school dealing with teachers and peer pressure. Teens experience a wide variety of feelings such as anger, sadness and being overwhelmed with life around them. Therapy can help by having someone listening as teens talk about their problems and feelings and offering suggestions to help them. [Read more…]

How to get excellent therapy

How can you get excellent therapy in Miami? How do you find a great therapy provider?  Some factors to consider when looking for someone who can give you good therapy would be:

  • Hourly rate. Some people who provide therapy argue that they are better than others if they charge a higher hourly rate. They tbelieve that “You get what you pay for.” They would say that they could not charge a high rate if they were not good.
  • Insurance. Similar to the above concept, some providers of therapy that don’t accept health insurance believe that they don’t have to take health insurance because they are great and don’t have to accept the “low” payments made by health insurance.
  • Ask friends and family. A good recommendation from someone you trust can be a huge factor in deciding who to get therapy from. Especially if more than 1 person recommends that therapy provider.
  • Online Reviews.  Online reviews can be a great way to see who other patients think great therapy providers are. I believe the most accurate reviews are on Yelp because they filter fake reviews the best. Google Maps has the largest number of reviews though but I think that there are more fake reviews on Google than yelp.
  • Location.  I do believe that great therapy providers in Miami will be located in a safe area.

There are many great therapy providers in Miami. The most important thing is to get help.

Who do you think is the best therapy provider in Miami?
