Treatment for Depression

Treatment for Depression

There are several different options for treatment of depression. For people who may have mild depression, psychotherapy may be helpful. Psychotherapy is talking to help you understand your thoughts and feelings and give you additional methods for dealing more effectively with them. This approach often brings about improvements in mood and functionality over time.

This type of therapy can be done one-on-one or in group settings. A support group is a group of people who are experiencing similar issues, and their discussion of similar ideas and feelings can be very helpful.

Another method of talk therapy is called cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps you become aware of your negative thought patterns. This approach teaches problem-solving skills, as well as ways to resist negative thoughts.

Another treatment option is taking medication, called antidepressants. There are a variety of medications available, and a doctor or psychiatrist will decide which medication to prescribe. When taking medications, you should take them exactly as instructed by your physician. Your doctor can also tell you about possible side effects.

In the case of someone who is extremely depressed and possibly suicidal, a good treatment option is to be in a psychiatric hospital for a period of time.

Finally, there are some things you can do to help prevent depression in your life. A great suggestion for everyone is to get regular exercise and maintain good sleep habits. Be sure to do some activities which you enjoy. Volunteering for various organizations can be a great way to help you feel better.

Having friends who are positive, encouraging and who care about you can be a great benefit. Try to find a person you can talk to, who you trust and who understands how you feel. Having one or two close, comfortable friendships can help in one’s overall outlook on life.
